Danzón was born during the COVID-19 pandemic, as an opportunity to collaborate again with pianist David Gilliland: Not only one of my favorite musicians and people, but also just a master composer and arranger responsible for much of the album.
For the theme of the album we wanted to work to reflect our collective musical life, best described as eclectic. Both David and myself regularly perform in dozens of musical settings, from solo and chamber music ro large orchestral repertoire, and spanning nearly all genres, and we wanted Danzon to reflect that.
An interesting note about the album - at least interesting to me - that with the constraints of my career and family commitments, David took upon himself choosing the takes we used on this recording. It was fascinating to hear the music through David's
ears, and appreciate his sensitivities: Specifically, while I tend to prioritize highlighting my instrument and at times my technical abilities, David prioritized larger-scale musical forms and gestures, and often made choices that I might not have, and I'm thankful for that! With works by Márquez, Piazzolla, Brahms, Gilliland, Crausaz, and Hopson, Danzón spans time, places, and styles, and remains one of the most engrossing projects we have ever taken on.
